About Erik Proseus
Erik is the original and now co-owner of Cirrus Weather Solutions, LLC - a private meteorological firm based in suburban Memphis, TN, webmaster and forecaster for MemphisWeather.net and JacksonWeather.net, author of the MWN Blog, and social media specialist. In addition, Erik conceptualized and developed (with a dedicated mobile app developer) StormWatch+ and SW+ Alerts, a fully customizable app-based weather warning notification system that is in use nationwide in both the MemphisWeather.net and StormWatch+ mobile apps. Erik has made Memphis and Mid-South weather and climate his career, hobby, and passion for over 25 years. Having lived in the region for well over three decades, he knows the weather patterns well and relays his knowledge through various social and electronic channels, while providing a vast array of weather information, products, and services on MemphisWeather.net and its sister site, JacksonWeather.net.
Erik's mission through Cirrus Weather Solutions is to use his meteorological expertise and honed communication skills to educate, inform, and prepare the public on current, future, and past weather conditions and events. He specializes in communicating clearly and effectively during severe weather, both in-person and via social media, and has been asked to speak to various groups on the topic, as well as consulting with multiple large outdoor events across the Mid-South with tens to hundreds of thousands of patrons. He is also one of the few recipients of the National Weather Association Digital Seal of Approval.
Erik graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Geography, a concentration in Meteorology, and a minor in mathematics from the University of Memphis in 1997. He was named by the University of Memphis Geography Department as “Outstanding Undergraduate” in 1997. Erik subsequently completed the coursework required to obtain an A.A.S. degree in Information Technology (Computer Programming concentration) from Southwest Tennessee Community College in 2002, again graduating summa cum laude.
After graduation, Erik was employed by MIT-Lincoln Laboratory in the Weather Sensing group as a weather researcher at the Integrated Terminal Weather System (ITWS) field site at Memphis International Airport. It was during this time that he fine-tuned his skills in research and development, radar interpretation, and mesoscale forecasting for the Memphis area, as well as website design and professional communication.
Since 2004, Erik has been employed by FedEx Express as a Sr. Aviation Meteorologist, serving in an administrative capacity and on the core team that brought new corporate-wide weather systems to FedEx in 2008 and again in 2022. Erik currently serves as the technical lead and chief trainer for end users of the system, coordinating testing and evaluation exercises, and serving as liaison between the vendor and the meteorology department. In addition, and in part due to his recognized communication skills, he regularly briefs members of senior management in Global Operations Control and Flight Operations on large-scale, hazardous weather patterns and other natural phenomena, providing a key component in the planning and execution of contingency operations for the airline.
Erik is Past-President of the Memphis Chapter of the American Meteorological Society/National Weather Association and is a current and/or past member of both national organizations.
In his personal life, Erik is married to his high school sweetheart, Jennifer, and has two teenage daughters, Grace and Paige. Their family is active in their church, where Erik serves as President of his Sunday School class and has served on various committees. Jennifer loves working as an elementary music teacher at a private Christian school in Memphis.
